Deputy Undersecretary of the Ministry of Food,
Agriculture and Livestock Mr. Tunç: "The Project will contribute
greatly both to the studies carried out within the scope of EU harmonization
process and to the strengthening and effectiveness of fisheries producers in
Turkey as their counterparts in the EU."
Opening meeting of the EU Twinning Project on
Building Institutional Capacity for the Unions of Fisheries Producers, which is
implemented under the partnership of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and
Livestock, the Netherlands, France and Sweden, was held in Ankara.
Deputy Undersecretary Mr. Tunç delivered a
speech in the opening meeting and stated that Turkey gets use of many project
funds within the EU harmonization process and producer unions should take an active
role in the studies to be carried out for making Turkish agriculture compatible
with the common market regime of the European Union. EU Twinning Project for the unions of
fisheries producers was initiated last month, Mr. Tunç added, and the Project will contribute greatly both to
the studies carried out within the scope of EU harmonization process and to the
strengthening and effectiveness of fisheries producers in Turkey as their
counterparts in the EU.
Mr. Tunç stated that it is aimed to increase
the awareness of producer unions through regulations in fisheries sector and
underlined that producer unions have great responsibility in the development of
Turkey’s agriculture.
General Director of Agrarian Reform Gürsel Küsek
said that the Project will establish a sound infrastructure for the
organization of the unions of fisheries producers. With the Project, an
institutional capacity will be developed in fisheries sector of Turkey, Mr.
Küsek continued, and a qualified team will be established thereof. Project team
will work for increasing the welfare of fishermen, for sustaining stability in
the market and for presenting high quality fisheries for consumers. Within the
scope of Project, Turkish legislation will be harmonized with the EU
legislation. Unions of the fisheries producers will be organized in compliance
with the EU legislation and the capacity of fisheries sector will be developed.
