Stating that trade volume with Sudan is around 500 million US Dollars, His Excellency the Minister of Food, Agriculture and Livestock Ahmet Eşref Fakıbaba noted: "We aim to increase this figure up to 2 billion US Dollars in the medium term thanks to Trade and Economic Cooperation Agreement that we will conclude".
The signing ceremony of the Minutes of the 14th Meeting of the Turkey-Sudan Joint Economic Commission, was held in the Meeting Hall of the Ministry of Economy with the participation of co-president of the Turkish side, H. E. Ahmet Eşref Fakıbaba, the Minister of Food, Agriculture and Livestock and co-president of the Sudanese side, H.E. Abdullatif Ahmed Ijaimi, the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry.
In his statement, the Minister Fakıbaba has pointed out that the Minutes finalized after the intense efforts exerted by the technical delegations of both sides will contribute to the rise of bilateral relations which have recently gained pace.
Expressing that the said Minutes serve as a road map indicating how bilateral relations in all fields ranging from trade to industry, from agriculture to energy will be improved, the Minister Fakıbaba has underlined the need for increase in efforts to enhance trade between two countries.
Emphasizing that it is a must to increase the contacts of private sectors and cooperation of both countries, "One of the critical issues in terms of the enhancement of trade is to improve cooperation in the field of standardization. Trade volume between Turkey and Sudan is around 500 million US Dollars. Thanks to the Trade and Economic Cooperation Agreement that we will conclude, we aim to increase this figure up to 2 billion US Dollars in the medium term. Sudan is our brother country. We believe that if our countries join forces, the peoples of two countries will have served considerably for their countries on the basis of win-win principle." the Minister stated.
Noting that cooperation could be made in all the fields including plant production, animal husbandry, rural development, supply of technical support to Sudanese experts, industry, trade and investment, mining, energy, construction, the Minister Fakıbaba stated: "As Turkey, we assume it as a duty to provide any kind of support to Sudan".
"I feel like home"
Stating that it is a very important meeting in terms of the economies of both countries, the Sudanese Minister Ijaimi expressed his gratitude for the hospitality of the Turkish side. Pointing out that trade volume between Turkey and Sudan does not reflect the potential, "It is very important for us to increase trade volume up to 2 billion US Dollars in the medium term. We have heartfelt love and respect for Turkey. We, both countries, should reach the level of 10 to 15 billion US Dollars in terms of the investments and foreign trade, this should be the target." the Minister noted.
Mentioning that Turkey serves as a long bridge between Europe and Asia, and Sudan is a gate for African continent, the Sudanese Minister Ijaimi touched upon the importance of improvement of trade relations within this context.
Having stressed that the investments could be made in many sectors and cooperation could be made in various fields, particularly in the fields of agriculture, animal husbandry and forestry in Sudan, the Sudanese Minister Ijaimi has noted:
"Here, I cannot count what Turkey has done for Sudan. Turkey has done a lot for Sudan and no country was with us at that time. Today, we are about to achieve a big job. This will go down in history. A man feels sad when he leaves from his own country, but now I feel like home. I believe that all the members of Sudanese delegation share this opinion. We will keep working with this love and ties between us. We will also be honored to host you."
Following the signing of the Minutes, the Minister Fakıbaba has presented an Ottoman style hand-made candy bowl to the Minister Ijaimi and the Sudanese Minister has presented crocodile skin bag and ivory prayer beads to the Minister Fakıbaba.
